Too Much Money

“Yes, we probably do,” Drew Brees the Saints future hall of famer quarterback, told WWL Radio when asked if athletes get paid too much. “Unless you’re finding a cure for cancer or creating world peace, I don’t know if anybody deserves to get that much money. Pro athletes are getting paid too much. Some professional competitors are getting paid 520 million dollars for nine years.

On March 10 of 2019, Antonio Brown got traded from the Steelers to the Raiders. He was traded after a long line of events that involved a contract dispute and yelling at coaches and players. He then got released twice playing only one game. He hasn’t played since. Expert players are getting paid too much! The Antonio Brown contract dispute all started with getting a too big contract. During the dispute Antonio Brown skipped practice a lot and his team didn’t play great. This means that the team got worse because Antonio got paid too much. Also, Derek Anderson has a net worth of $6 million and in November of 2010 after a reporter asked him what he and another teammate were laughing during the game about he stormed off after telling the reporter that he wasn’t laughing even when there is evidence he was. When you get paid too much these are examples of things you might do. So if anyone has control over the checks of skillful sports players make them smaller!

On February 21 2019 Manny Machado signed a 520 million dollar contract for nine years for the San Diego Padres. I heard about this from my dad and I was shocked how much that was. This amount of money is just impossible to imagine. To give you an idea of how much that is, the average sea shore mansion is $13 million! So why do they need this? The answer is they don’t. You might say that people who play pro sports can donate it or give to their family but even if you have 6 million dollars and you spend 3 million on a house then you still have 3 million dollars and most skilled jocks have more than 6 million dollars. When you get paid that much you probably will forget or not realize the value of money. For example Odell Beckham Jr. spent a ridiculous amount of money on 4 Rolls Royces! Also, Magic Johnson  was a superstar NBA player but he spent all of his money and ended up broke. When you get really rich this is what can happen. Instead of donating it or making a plan for it later in life people might use it up. Boxing star Mike Tyson blew his fortune on many things but he would probably want his $2 million purchase of a bathtub made of gold for his ex-wife’s birthday. This money could have gone to a plan for someone he knew or to charity.

Many expert competitors have kids. Whether it’s Antonio Brown or Michael Jordan they do. But pro athletes also get paid a lot which means it can be hard not to spoil them. For example, Tiger Woods spent $60 million dollars a mansion for him and his family when he doesn’t even have full custody of his kids. The kids will probably want to be with their dad because he has more money and nicer things. Also keep in mind that the pros also travel a lot so they might try to make it up to the kids by getting them the newest toy or gadget. From my experience kids who have wealthy parents tend to show off. For example if they have the newest phone they would brag about it. Also, they become very disrespectful to their parents and yell at them because the parents won’t get the kids what the kids want. Plus if you are trying to do what is easiest for you, you probably won’t stop because it’s easier for you. But it’s definitely harder for whoever has to deal with them later in life.

During my story I hoped you realized how much professional athletes are getting paid and how ridiculous the amounts of money are. If they keep getting paid this much that will be less money going around and might end up as the second great depression. This is why professional athletes are getting paid too much.
