The Well

The state of Blight is a unique place. The only place in fact. At the core of Blight is the capital, where all order, laws, power, and life radiate from. Some great building where people work or reside is probably what you are envisioning, but no, Blights rules are created by something very different. At the core of Blight, surrounded by a dense thicket, is a single small building. The Well.

Immortality has been created in the state of Blight. However, to many people, living forever is not what they would want. Many people desire an ending, which is why at the place life is created, death is present also. When one enters, immortality is removed from their body. Then, they are gone. As The Well fills up, the built up pain of the people that have entered it must be released, traveling to the existing. Pain has to go somewhere. Someone has to endure it. That pain draws new people to The Well. If they enter, they would not have to feel it any longer. This design was created to allow longer lifetimes, but not let people stay living forever. When it was made, people could live for half a millennium, but slowly people chose to enter sooner and sooner.

Now, people enter as soon as they realize it’s a decision they can make. No one wanted to think about this long term effect. Now that it has arrived nobody knows what to do because by the time they are capable of intellectual thought they are already on their way to The Well. Although it was created to allow society to thrive, it ended up crumbling down on itself.
