The Ring

It was a cold Christmas Eve. The year was 2053, and everybody was thrilled about this new phone company, especially little Timmy.

“Mom, mom, look what I drew. It’s a picture of me unwrapping the geophone.”

Apple was becoming irrelevant as this new up-and-coming company named Geotech was releasing their first phone that was priced at five dollars. They also made over eight billion of these phones, so there is enough for everyone who wants one. Come Christmas morning, people had tents and RVs parked outside their local stores, waiting for the sign to turn to open.

“Timmy, Timmy, come! It’s Christmas!”

“I’m coming!!!”

Timmy unwrapped the paper and screamed in joy as he stared down the shiny box. This reaction was similar to the rest of the world’s; soon after those reactions would change very fast.

Everyone was ecstatic about their new devices. As families all around the world sat down for Christmas dinner, a ringing began. Nobody knew what it was for. It sounded like an amber alert, but it lasted much longer.

“Ring ring ring. ring ring ring. Hello everyone, this is the CEO of Geotech speaking. Our world is corrupted by bad, heartless people. And I am here to change that. But the only way to change that is to control people’s thoughts and actions.”

Even when this voice stopped talking, the ringing still lasted; the sound wasn’t the problem though. It was everyone’s reaction to it. It seemed to put everybody in a trance. An almost ghost-like state of mind that they couldn’t escape.

As Boxing Day came, this weird thing started to happen. Everybody was acting extremely nice and doing really good things. Kids were helping the elderly cross the street, and everyone was donating to the homeless,  but the people who didn’t get one of these phones were all confused by the turnaround in their society. The first sign of problems came in Australia. A young man didn’t have a Geotech-made phone, so he wasn’t under this spell of generosity and kindness. As he turned a corner, he saw a batch of puppies. He decided to steal one for himself, and that was when he was attacked from behind and taken out of this world. You may be wondering to yourself, If these people are so perfect, why are they attacking this man? Well, these phones were also programmed to enable the user to kill any person who didn’t own one and wasn’t in the geotrance. Geotech thought that this would cleanse the society of people who were so bad they refused to buy Geotech phones.

Meanwhile, headlights glare from a Bugatti as the CEO of Geotech, Mr. Peterson, pulls into his new mansion. His feet glide on his marble floor as he strides into his office and sits down in front of one of his twenty monitors. He opens up his laptop and watches the world unravel in front of his eyes. He watches Geotech users through the cameras in their phones. He sees them all slaying the non-users with small deadly pellet bullets that shoot out of their phones. He grins as he sees his plan come to life.
