Jaxon lives in Brooklyn, a big city located in New York. He and his mom live in a nice apartment somewhere in the city. Their landlord is not always turning on the water, and giving them gas to cook on a grill. After a while Jaxon’s mom decided she wanted to get the water and gas back, so she decided to go to court and confront him to a judge. While she was doing that, Jaxon was staying with his grandmother Ma. He then discovers something about his crazy grandmother… that she is a witch! In the book Dragons in a Bag, the main character Jaxon learns about magic with the help from the witch Ma and learns that you should always believe in other people and yourself.
Jaxon discovers that there are multiple realms that people can travel through and travel back. Jaxon learns that there are multiple realms and that you can travel between them using the transporters by going with Ma. He knows this as a fact because he actually visited another realm. Ma showed him where the transponder is, which is in an old guardhouse. Ma showed him the transponder by asking him if he wanted to go for a ride. She said, “Ready to go?” “Go where?” I ask as my stomach does a quick flip. “From this world to another. Shouldn’t take too long. Have you ever been to Coney Island, Jax?” I nod and Ma says, “it’s sort of like riding the cyclone-bumpy, but fast.”
Jaxon learns about what the dragons are and what they can do. With Ma, he figures out that inside Ma’s tin are three dragons. He also figures out some rules about the dragons. One: don’t feed them anything sweet, two: don’t let them out of the tin, three: they are from another realm. Ma’s mission is to return them safely to the realm that the dragons were sent from. On page 8 of The Dragon Thief the author includes a simile, which is one of the literary devices I learned about. “I haven’t been feeding it, yet the magical creature has grown to be almost as big as a kitten.”
Jaxon’s point of view is that he thinks it’s his fault that Ma is trapped in a different realm because he wanted to have Ma as a friend. Jaxon is upset that Ma is trapped in a different realm because he considered Ma as a friend and he learned so much from her. Also, he knew that Ma was going to retire soon, so he was upset that she decided to save him and send him back to the world of Brooklyn. By doing that, it meant leaving herself trapped in the other realm. Jaxon is determined to get Ma back and he won’t stop until he does.
After the story Jaxon felt like he wanted revenge and really wanted to get that dragon back from Kavita. Some of the big passages the author wrote in the story were when he was with Ma, when he learned about magic lilies, and when he discovered there were multiple realms. He also learned about what the dragons were and what they could do. He also felt mad at some points, like when Ma got trapped in another realm. He got really mad because he thought it was his fault. In time, Jaxon learned that you should always believe in other people and yourself.
