The Great American Flag

“Americans” bask in sunlight of sin

While it scorches and sears those who’ve made it a reality

Who’ve built it on their backs

Those called gang members or terrorists

Their rightfully American blood up to the chin of those on top

Because of the “Promised Land”

The “American Dream”

The “Land of the Free”

“Illegal.” “Alien.” “Rapist.” “Dealer.” “Criminal.”

Perseverent. Strong. Dedicated. Driven.

Human.

How is America so great and just?

What was equal, what was fair about

Emmett? Trayvon?

The poisoned roots and twisted past

The rotting future

Police are shown more as terrorists

Than the protectors they’re meant to be

Won’t hesitate to slam a young black man down on the street

Pull a gun on a teenager

A black hoodie and a backpack

America’s hierarchy

The science of race

The opportunity of race

A silver spoon is opportunity

Gangs and poverty is not

American lies plague the desperate

Set up the younger generations to repeat the cycle

Set them up for easy success or let them sink into crime

America boasts a dream for any who would desire

Yet so clearly spits in the face of its own constitution
