Life of Captain Stodgy

It was a Sunday Morning like any other in Sea Town, the town on water. Capitan Stodgy had scrambled some drab-looking eggs and bacon, the same thing that Captain Stodgy had every day, the same dull breakfast. Captain Stodgy put on his khaki pants, grey hoodie, white socks and black shoes: a truly stodgy outfit. Captain Stodgy was once just known as Captain but recently turned into Captain Stodgy because he crashed his boat and said he would never sail again. Now Captain Stodgy’s life was so dull that Captain Stodgy didn’t even know what to do anymore. Captain Stodgy was so uninspired that even his clothes were prosy (and showed no imagination). Captain Stodgy almost barely did anything at all: he was just too uninspired.

Captain Stodgy wanted to go back to his old life. Captain Stodgy’s Mom, Ms. Vivacious (who was the opposite of stodgy and was always excited), made him sign up for everything but nothing ever amused Captain Stodgy. Piano, scuba diving, painting, and much more. Captain Stodgy never wanted to really do these classes; he would rather be at home doing what he always did in a dull, unimaginative way.

Captain Stodgy’s mom, Ms. Vivacious, who was full of life, made Captain Stodgy go to the community library and sign up for scuba diving classes. She hoped Captain Stodgy would find a new hobby, such as sailing, which had once fulfilled him. Captain Stodgy mopily signed up, because scuba just seemed like such a waste of time. Captain Stodgy saw that Señor Exuberant had signed up as well! Señor Exuberant was the opposite of Captain Stodgy! He was full of life and was always excited about doing things!

In scuba diving class, Señor Exuberant kept trying to talk to Captain Stodgy. Señor Exuberant would go on and on, and Captain Stodgy would just answer with one word answers, hinting he wanted to stop talking. Señor Exuberant never got the message and just seemed so happy, definitely not what Captain Stodgy was.

When Captain Stodgy was done with scuba class, he slumped home and told his mom that the class was the same as every class: boring. Captain Stodgy nearly drowned of boredom, he recalled. Captain Stodgy dragged himself with his bag of scuba gear to his room. He sat in his boat bed and thought about what could he possibly do now; he had tried everything. As he pondered this, he just lay down on his bed and started  to think. Ms. Vivacious pranced in, yet again. This time she suggested a better idea than all the last. Ms. Vivacious suggested that he go back to sailing.

Captain Stodgy thought about this but was too uninspired to go out and do it. He was full of apathy and didn’t really care if classes went badly, so when his mom made him go, he just went. He got to the dock and saw all the boats and his old friend Captain Busy who was running around with piles of life vests for people going on his boat tours!

Captain Busy almost dropped everything he was holding out of surprise. Captain Stodgy had not been to the dock in years. He didn’t really care though. He said hello to Captain Busy and went to the dock room. Captain Stodgy also hadn’t been on his boat for years! He checked in with the woman at the front desk to tell her he was riding his boat today.

He walked to the boat, hopped on, and untied the rope that was connecting the boat to the dock. Captain Stodgy was still himself but just a better version on the boat in the water. Smelling the smell of the water was great. Once he got back from the sea he said hi and talked to Captain Busy who was again carrying a load of things from place to place. Once he got home he was still the same dull Captain Stodgy. He ate chicken noodle soup for dinner and went to bed. When Captain Stodgy awoke the next morning, he ate what he always ate: scrambled eggs and bacon. After breakfast he put on his grey hoodie, khaki pants, black shoes and white socks. He was the same old stodgy him! Captain Stodgy lived dull-ly ever after!
