Who is free?

Were slaves free?

Were they free when they were working,

Building,

Making our country?

Were they free when they were hiding

Praying not to be found?

Were they free while they were owned

By other people?

Were they free in the North?

Certainly not in the South.

Can we use freedom

To describe our country?

When the ones who built

it had the opposite?

Is America actually free

Or do we just like to say it is.
