One Thursday morning, at 7:00am, Inscrutable Iyla was eating waffles and sausages for breakfast. Inscrutable Iyla lived in a small blue house on the corner of Mulberry Lane. Once she finished her breakfast, it was time for work. Inscrutable Iyla aspired to be really good at helping people, so her job was customer assistance. Iyla walked to work every day, and today, while she was walking, a man said, “Pardon me, but can you give me directions to the nearest park?”
“Of course,” Iyla said.
She began to give directions, but the man interrupted her and asked her to repeat herself. Inscrutable Iyla repeated the direction again and continued with the rest.
“Nevermind!” said the man. “I can’t hear or understand you. You’re talking too fast and too quietly.” The man walked away to ask someone else for help.
Inscrutable Iyla wanted to help but it was too late. The man was gone, so she continued walking to work. Iyla arrived ready to help people, since she had just finished her training and would get to talk to consumers for the first time today.
Two hours later
Inscrutable Iyla was really upset. All throughout the day customers had gotten angry with her, asking for someone else to help them or saying they could not understand her. Inscrutable Iyla had great fervor for her job, so she didn’t want to lose it. When Inscrutable Iyla’s boss called her, she turned crimson with embarrassment. Inscrutable Iyla was fired from her job. Her boss did not want someone whom the customers could not understand. Inscrutable Iyla packed up her things and left work.
On the walk back home, the street was teeming with people, and instead she ran into another person asking for directions. She tried to help them but they still could not understand her. Inscrutable Iyla did not know what to do. She kept walking.
“Hi can you give me directions to the train station?” a woman asked.
She pondered whether to just keep walking or to stop and help. She decided to try again. This time she tried to talk more slowly and loudely, gesticulating how far to go and whether the woman should take a right or a left.
“Thank you,” said the woman and then she walked away.
Inscrutable Iyla was so happy that she jumped up and down, celebrating. Two months later, Inscrutable Iyla started her own new program to help others learn how to communicate better. Her program specializes in helping people talk clearer, so others can understand them. The program works with people on either talking slower or louder. Inscrutable Iyla wants to help people by giving them a chance to get a job that helps others.
