Discrimination Against People

For as long as I can remember there has never been fairness to people of color, they are put down and looked at differently. Differently in a bad way. No one should be treated like that but some communities are. Everyone is different, like your fingerprint for example! But some people are treated poorly based on the color of their skin.

In the U.S. people made rules that were hard on people of color but people of color were brave and faced breaking the law when they were trying to make things right. For example, Martin Luther King showed how strong love and peace are in his speeches. He knew ever since he was a kid that things were not right for people of color. When he was older he marched and prayed and spoke speeches that made citizens want to show love not hate. A famous quote he made in one of his speeches was “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Barack Obama showed that people of color can do the exact same things as other people. He showed that by being the first person of color in the White house. A person of color like Barack Obama is really showing that people of color can do and will do anything to show that they are treated poorly.

I know I am a person of color. My dad is Indian and was born in Coimbatore. His favorite place in India is Kerala. He identifies as a person of color. My mom was born in Michigan. She identifies as white. I am half Indian and half white. An example of how people of color are treated poorly is how Rosa Parks just wanted to sit on a bus to go home from work. She ended up getting kicked off the bus and starting a bus boycott. A famous quote from her is “The only tired I was, was tired of giving in.” This quote is powerful to all the public in her time and now. In her time she wanted to stand up for what is right. Now the quote is used to show how everyone is a person and should be treated fairly.

I think that everyone should be treated fairly no one should be judged about how they are going to act because of the color of their skin. Any person is normal and any person has their differences and hobbies. Why should people be treated badly because they are a person of color? Everyone is different. There are also assumptions crowds make when thinking about people of color. I read a book where this girl and her mom were going to the mall when they ran into a boy from the girl’s school and his mom, the moms were talking when the boy said “I didn’t know you had a white mom. I guess that’s where you get your beauty from.” A person of color like her was shocked that he said that but he didn’t even know that he offended her.

Another statement about people of color is from Malcolm X. A direct quote from him that he has used in some of his speeches is ”A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything.”

I know that someday people are going to just be people. No discrimination or injustice. Some people do not believe that things are going to change. There will always be bad in the world but not if people can change it. With a perspective, I’m Maya Jayaram
