Dear Darnel Kenelton

Dear Darnel Kenelton,

Memphis, Tennessee

Hey, right now I am in the middle of The Battle of Memphis. This a naval battle on the Mississippi River, but by the time you are getting this letter the Union Navy already won the battle. The navy forced me to board the ship with Daniella and shortly later they made me shoot somebody. After that, I have begun to start being more aware of my surroundings because I don’t want anyone trying to kill me because I killed that other man.

I kept my humanity by listening to the navy so that they wouldn’t kill me. I made sure Daniella was in a safe place with people to protect her so that she wouldn’t get hurt. I made sure that even though shooting the man was traumatizing that I would stay strong and hopefully I can come home soon. When it comes down to war I don’t condone it. It makes me feel unsafe and scared. War changes the way a lot of people look at America. When I hear about anything that relates to war, I feel a shock go through my body of fright. Daniella and I really miss you and hope to see you very soon.

Love,

    Daphnella Kenelton
