The smell of sweet oranges fills the air by Corrine’s house. But something  strange is in the air – like Corrine’s family, life, and past. But what is this sudden power in the necklace Corrine, the protagonist, wears? And then a mysterious person shows up out of nowhere! Trouble comes to Corrine. In The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste, when Corrine runs into obstacles she has friends and family to help push through.

Throughout the book Corrine’s friends help her. Corrine met Dru in the market, one of the settings and they  became friends. They met bouki and Malik and they helped her and Dru and they became friends too. When Corrine and her friends try to stop Severine and the jumbies some fantasy fiction creatures that they didn’t think existed. Dru, Bouki, and Malik helped Corrine by making a distraction so that she could get the necklace. The oranges are repetitive because it keeps popping up in the story and helping Corrine.

When Corrine’s friends know that she was going after Severine they said she was by her side. When Severine kept coming over to corrines and turned Pierre into a jumbie she was going after severine. When Corrine found out that her mothers necklace hurt Severine she knew it would help her. When Severine attacked the village, Corrine was coming up with a plan to take her down. Corrine climbs the cliff to get her necklace back to defeat Severine but while dru, bouki and malik are creating a distraction. The author used symbolism for the seed in pg 209 the seed symbolizes the power that corrine has been growing inside her.

Throughout Corrine’s life her family has always helped her. It is interesting that she says the necklace was given to her by her mom. A flashback is when Corrine was home her mother helped her telling her it was safe. When her mother died her father helped through the rest of her life. When Corrine is cornered on the cliff her mothers seed helped her defeat Severine. The seeds helped the forest grow back lots of trees. 

Corrine meets many dangers but her friends are there by her side to fight with her. Her family and friends help her in her life. Corrine’s family helps her because the necklace helped defeat severine. Her friends helped fight the jumbies so they didn’t go for Corrine. Ahead on the road her friends are destined to help Corrine and Corrine is destined to confront Severine.
