Early Years
Cleopatra was born in Alexandria in 69 B.C. (during that time the years
were counted backwards). The specific date is unknown. Cleopatra’s father was
Ptolemy the I. Cleopatra was still a teenager when she became queen. She became Queen in 51 B.C. The name Cleopatra means “glory of her father.”
Life as an Adult
In June, 47 B.C., Cleopatra had a son. He was known as Ptolemy XV. Cleopatra sometimes dressed to look like a god to represent power. Cleopatra became Cleopatra VII. She was the last queen of Egypt. Cleopatra became queen after her father died in 51 B.C.
Accomplishments
Cleopatra wanted Julius Caesar’s help to win back the throne from her brother, Ptolemy XIII, so a friend rolled her up in a rug and pretended she was a gift for Julius Caesar. Cleopatra had the whole night to talk to Caesar. Caesar wanted to end the fight between Cleopatra and her brother and make them co-rulers again. Ptolemy XIII and his advisers did not like that idea. They wanted to get rid of Cleopatra. So they went to war against Caesar. After a hard fight Caesar won. Ptolemy drowned in the Nile River.
Conclusion
Did you know that Cleopatra made a lot of changes in ancient Egypt. She took back the throne from her brother, Ptolemy XIII by negotiating. She also had a son and was the last queen of Egypt.
