It was a typical day for Little Ms. Presumptuous who always made early assumptions about things. She noticed that the sky was slightly gray and said to herself, “It’s going to be a very gloomy day.” She got out of bed and put layers of clothes on because she presumed it was going to be cold. She was overconfident in her assumption about the weather and put layers and layers of clothing on.
After getting dressed she went out to have breakfast. She found two types of cereal in the cabinet: Frosted Flakes, and a box of sugar-free Cheerios.
She jumped right to the conclusion that the sugar-free cereal was going to be terrible so she got the box of Frosted Flakes, and ate it right up.
After Little Ms. Presumptuous ate her breakfast, her roomate L’il Retort (who was always making firm statements in response to questions) came out and said “Have you tried the sugar- free cereal? It’s just so good. I can’t believe you haven’t tried it. You never try new things and you always think things that aren’t true. You need to check yourself.”
Once Little Miss Presumptuous got to the library, she was signing people up for scuba diving lessons.
“Hello. One ticket please,” said Captain Stodgy.
“Sure thing,” Ms. Presumptuous said in return. “Grandson or granddaughter?”
“This is actually for me,” said Captain Stodgy a little annoyed.
“I’m so sorry. You’ll be great.”
A girl came up to her later and asked for a book called “The Friend.” Little Ms. Presumptuous was confused because she looked really young. She couldn’t help saying “Aren’t you a little too young to read that book?”
The girl looked very offended and said “Well I think I am old enough. I’m 13.”
Little Ms. Presumptuous felt bad and said “Oh, I’m sorry. Follow me right this way.” Little Ms. Presumptuous couldn’t stop assuming things! She didn’t know how not to.
On and on that day Little Ms. Presumptuous kept saying the wrong things! She assumed older people were actually young kids. She assumed that some boys were actually girls, and she even thought one of her coworkers was someone looking for books! Poor Little Ms. Presumptuous. She didn’t mean to hurt so many people’s feelings!
Ms. Presumptuous went home, not knowing what to do. Little Ms. Presumptuous felt sorry for all the people she had offended while assuming things. At this point, she had probably annoyed everyone in the town. She needed to think of something. What could she do and how could she change?
Little Ms. Presumptuous and Li’l Retort thought all day and Little Ms. Presumptuous finally said “I have an idea! I can write sorry cards to everyone and you can teach me how to not be presumptuous!”
“That’s a good idea. Let’s start now,” replied Li’l Retort. Right away Li’l Retort started to teach Little Ms. Presumptuous how to not be presumptuous.
While she was taking her lessons, she made heart cards that said “I’m sorry,” and explained how what she said and what she did was wrong. After a full week of sorry cards and lessons, Little Ms. Presumptuous changed.
She went to everyone’s house one by one, and said sorry. Some of them forgave her, some of them stayed mad, but most importantly, Little Ms. Presumptuous changed.
