Thomas Brewer. Gettysburg – July 5, 1863
Dear Mother,
It has been a few months since I left home. I miss your warm hugs and your delicious beef stew. I miss how you would yell at me if I was not home before the town bell. I made about 3 new friends now, it is not so bad. My friend Archie Geoffrey is one I have gotten very close with. We have promised each other that if one of us were to die, we would send each others belongings and letters to family. That will not happen though. Knowing how tough me and him both are, there is no way that would ever happen.
I have been learning… learning how to live in a whole different world. One where you don’t know if it will be your last day. One where instead of learning basic maths, you learn basic guns. Remember when I was younger and Father and I would talk everyday about how one day I would be in the war? Fighting for my country and learning how to use guns? That day came, I just wish he was here to see it. I know he is there, the Lord will let him know. I have been doing so much work, I am one of the most respected soldiers. Father would be proud. I hope you and Emma are too. But war is not pretty. I have seen many brutal things and two of our own soldiers die in my arms. It is hard, but worth it if I am serving my country.
How is Emma? She was still sick last time you wrote back. Lord help her get better, I want to see her when I get back… take good care of my sister. I know before I left, you were mad that I was leaving you and Emma, but do not worry I will make it back. I will surprise you when the war that I win, is finally over. Please let Emma know I am just a few months away, I do not want her to worry. I hope you are doing well Mother… No one else here can replace you and your love. I will see you soon.
Until we meet again family,
Thomas Brewer.
