Video Games: A Puzzle or Not

“It’s always the small pieces that make the big picture.” (BTW this is made by Pinterest), I think this is a good quote that describes my essay. Like in the quote (Ex. Legends of Zelda, Mario, and Street Fighter), there is so many little puzzles/games that come into one big picture. Video games are really puzzles.

Monument valley is a fun puzzle. On one fine evening many people were walking and having a good time meanwhile I was playing Monument Valley and I was annoyed consequently, I could not get anywhere! I had crows, obstacles and walls everywhere I went! This was not good. Right then and there I realized that is is all a puzzle. For this puzzle I had to change my perspective. Literally. I scrolled around the screen and realized there is another way to do this. There is a whole different path that leads to the end. That is mind blowing. Now some amazing facts about the game. It won a 2014 Apple Design Award, was named Apple’s best iPad game of 2014, and sold over two million copies by January 2015; by May 2016, sales of the game exceeded 26 million (That is a lot of awards BTW).  Puzzles are so fun and interesting because you have to think in different ways. Video games may “Rot your brain”, but this game is very hard and makes you use what’s up there.

Tetris is hard. Me and my dad walking into the might HIGH SCORE ARCADE. My favorite arcade. It had every cool arcade game. Even the new Street Fighter 5! We inserted our coins and started playing. I completely trashed him! He saw Tetris in the “old game zone”. I looked at what caught his eye. We looked at each other and had a silent conversation. The next second me and dad were at it. I realized that this game was not so easy. I was losing. badly. He placed the blue square pieces into the little gaps and does the same with the other bricks. My dad gave me some tips. He said the I had to turn the pieces so I can make rows. I realized that rotating was also pretty hard. He won and that’s a reason why Tetris is hard.

Frogger is a puzzle about timing. I just beat him in mortal kombat. My dad spotted frogger and said, “Let’s play frogger!”

“Okay!” I responded. We walked over to the machine and tried 2 player. It did not work. I selected single player and played. This was my first time! I hopped onto the street and got run over by a truck. A bunch of cars passed in front of me. I realized that this is about timing! I died twice after that. But I got further! Puzzles! Yay!

These are only the most obvious puzzles. There are so many more games like that (EX: Street Fighter it’s hard to input all the combos, like a puzzle!). Not all of them have to be old arcade games too! There are more recent games like Fortnite that are also puzzles. Find your own puzzles/games!
