EXCERPT FROM Farpoint

The year is 2096 and the world has become Virtual Reality. The real world has been neglected, and the entire human race has become fixed to a headset. People are happier being able to choose how much interaction they want. The world is at peace. There is no war and no crime. Other animals are claiming the land because humans aren’t interrupting their flow of life. The tech industry is thriving. There is only one game everyone is playing, because that game has everything anyone would ever need. That game is called “Farpoint.”

A new disease has developed, and the first person to get that disease is Avery, our video game protagonist. This disease goes by the name Visual Paralysis. This disease makes it so your brain cannot go into virtual reality.

Avery has lived her life always as an outsider. As soon as a child enters this world, they are put into a daycare away from their parents. This is so the parents can continue playing their game, and the daycare people can get the child playing with their parents as soon as possible. Avery was permitted to leave the daycare as soon as she became four years of age, as there is a children’s section on Farpoint. There they learn how to speak, write, and play the game. The instructors do not try to teach them anything, they just take care of them. Then, the child can reunite with their guardians. Avery was a rare case: her disease kept her out of Virtual Reality and in daycare.

“Get back here, Avery!” the daycare instructor said in an aggravated tone.

“You’ll never take me alive!” Avery responded in a playful tone while making her escape.

She was now sixteen years of age, and she had gotten special lessons on how to speak and write. She had not gotten the education other kids get from within the game. She was the only teenager there because she was the first one with this disease. She was a smart and mischievous kid; on a few occasions she had found a way out of the daycare. As Avery grew older, they realized she is flexible and athletic. She was good with the younger kids, so they made her play with them before they went away. She knew not to get too attached.

They were short staffed, so they let Avery babysit. When the instructor was out, Avery was in. The instructor was a strict lady, and she wanted all the kids to do exactly as she said. Meanwhile, Avery wanted them to do whatever they wanted. The contrast was good for the kids, and they enjoyed Avery’s company more than the instructors. The kids, who had found an escape route out of the building, were in on Avery’s new exit plan. One kid told the instructor, so now she needed to play it safe. Good thing she had a plan B.

“Avery has found an exit out of the daycare!” the instructor reported to the founder in an exhausted tone.

“Oh, just let her go,” the founder said in a forgiving tone. He had taken a liking to her.

“But she will find out!” the instructor said in an annoyed voice to the founder.

“Nevermind that. She is old enough to learn about the outside. She will come back after learning about it. After all, she does want to join us as staff in the daycare. You should try to get on her good side,” the founder said slowly in a kind voice. He was a peaceful man who had gotten very good at tolerating children.

“Fine, whatever. You are probably right,” the instructor said, defeated. She was always a little bit sassy.

Meanwhile, Avery was making her escape. Everything was going smooth so far, but she had only got rid of one instructor. The founder wanted Avery to escape and experience the outside world. He thought it would be good for her, because he knew it would tear her apart. Avery had always seen the outside world as some sort of paradise. Animals roaming without fear, tall skyscrapers untarnished by endless sun and rain. To her, the outside world was her dream made reality.
