Aventurine wanted to leave the cave. She was determined to prove herself; she always wanted to help her family hunt, but she couldn’t. She was always restless to get outside the cave and away from her brother, so that is exactly what she does. Aventurine is tricked while hunting, and her life changes. In the book Dragon with a Chocolate Heart by Stephanie Burgis, the main character Aventurine goes on a quest to find chocolate, but she finds a lot more than that.
Aventurine is determined to prove herself to her Mother and Marina. Aventurine feels angry when her mother tells her she can’t hunt right now. When Aventurine goes out hunting she is determined to show her mother that she can hunt, and doesn’t need to wait for her scales to harden. Aventurine never found her passion like her brother and sister. She also feels overshadowed by her siblings because she is different from them. She is determined to prove to her mother that she can hunt because her mother was always yelling at her to find a pastime. When Aventurine asks for an internship at the chocolate heart Marina is skeptical. That some random girl with no experience Could be strong enough to work at a chocolate shop. Aventurine is persistent to prove herself to marina by working hard and pushing herself to do better. I think that the reason Aventurine wants to prove herself to Marina is that she finally found her passion. She also doesn’t want to let Marina down because the Chocolate Heart is not very popular and Aventurine doesn’t want it to get more unpopular.
Aventurine is very passionate about chocolate hence that is why she became human. When she smells the chocolate, Aventurine just couldn’t resist the temptation of the chocolate. She is very passionate about chocolate and that is why she was so determined to get a job at the chocolate house. She also commits herself to make sure she makes perfect chocolate. I think she sees Marina as another person like her mom in some ways. I think that is why she is so passionate about chocolate because she just found her passion and she doesn’t want to let Marina down. On pages 17-19 the author uses the literary device of Tone and mood by including “Ahhhh”! And then everything exploded inside me, and the world went black”. This change in tone and mood gives the reader a hint as to what will happen next. I think that Aventurine is happy that she found her passion because she had never found a spark like she just has. It is almost a good thing that aventurine got turned into a human because she seems happier now.
Aventurine needs a friend to help her navigate being human. Aventurine never had a friend before because she just lived with her family. At first, Aventurine was skeptical about accepting Silke’s help because she felt like she didn’t need a friend and she was trying to be independent. Later on in the story, Silke kept popping up everywhere and Aventurine was sort of forced to accept their friendship. Towards the end of the story, Aventurine becomes more open to having friends because she realized that it is okay to expect help. Silke helped Aventurine at the end of the book because she helped Aventurine get into the castle and tell the king that the dragons didn’t want to hurt them. She also helped Aventurine when she wanted to face her family and tell them what happened. I think that Aventurine learned it is good to have a friend. On page 137 the author used the literary device of another aspect of the author’s writing style by including “After all, if there are truly rats running around the kitchen floors…cockroaches in the cupboard where the chocolate is kept…”. This shows that Aventurine has a lot of problems popping up and Silke will help her get through them. In this next book, I think that this theme will pop up a lot.
Aventurine found a lot from her adventures. When Aventurine confronts her family about being a girl now she realized that she didn’t want to be a dragon. Aventurine went to find chocolate but she found friends, a passion, and Determination. When she was a dragon she felt overshadowed and she wanted to do more than stay in a cave. She was on a search for her newly found passion but instead, she found more than a piece of chocolate.
