Chapter one: getting started
It. Had. HAPPENED! Well, it had been happening for a while now. The nature was flowers and coconut trees everywhere, with warm air surrounding, and a sweet scent.
But for this part, it was the car. The dog drooling, sick air, and the literal middle of nowhere. Yay. Just yay.
Jessica spaced out, her blonde hair swaying in the wind from the window. She had red cheeks and brown eyes and pearly white teeth. Her sister had Long, black hair, Red lips, and swirly blue eyes.
“So, let me get this straight, we’re moving and we’re driving to our new house?” Jessica asked deeply after 5 hours in the car with her puppy, Daisy and 16 year old big sister, Ruby. She looked out the window. Trees. Just trees. A ton of trees.
Daisy was getting slobber all over the back seat and snoring and sneezing. Yup, she was a goofy golden!
Her family was on summer break. They had said earlier that it was a surprise car trip. Like, what? Every night they would go outside and put up a tent. It was extremely difficult, but Jessica Liked to sleep outside under the stars with squirrels and bunnies and deer.
In the car, most of the time Jessica was asleep. They had done it for 4 nights! Now, she was awake and hyper. Jessica was suspicious. This was unusual for her family to be keeping a surprise for this long.
So after 15 minutes of Jessica asking, “Are we there yet? Where are we going? How long do you plan to keep this secret?“ Her family gave in.
Chapter two: Why?
Ruby now answered, “Yes, dad got a job here,” Ruby was a great person. She liked Art, Music, and She had ripped Jessica out of thought like a chalkboard sound. Jessica sighed. “Why do I have to move? Why did this have to happen? Why can’t we go back? Why are we moving?” She thought.
And Why was she even narrating in her head? That is my job, fellow readers. Well, if anyone is reading this, but if you are readin’ this, it wouldn’t make sense for me to say that. Of course, she didn’t know that. I know, that was deep!
She longed to go back home. Why? Because back home she didn’t need to worry about making friends or moving to a new place. There, she felt at home. But at least here, she didn’t need to worry about owls.
Right? She had been scared of owls her entire life because when she was little, Ruby said they are killers. And in the autumn, They made mist everywhere in the forest and made illusions. If you followed the sweet, but dangerous song, you would be lost forever. Ruby had regretted it and said sorry now, though. Ruby liked the forest too.
“It’s okay,” They’re mom said, trying to calm her down.
“ It has a really big forest!” Ruby exclaimed. Jessica loved forests, she loves animals! She could a little bit understand them. And no, Not like those cringy shows. Jessica really could understand them because She just studied them a lot.
Basically, you think and/or wonder it, she answers it. “Ruby?” Jessica asked, wonderingly. “ Do you know-“
“ wait! Let me stop you there. Please call me Grape. It sounds cool, lil sis.” Ruby said. Really? GRAPE?! Whatever, Jessica thought.
Maybe Ruby wanted to be called grape because you could make art with them, or maybe because you could choke on them? Jessica tilted her head. “Sure, I’ll start calling you er, um, GRAPE when you stop calling me lil sis.” Jessica said, trying to sound deep and scary. “Anyway, what time is it?” She asked.
“10:00 in the morning,“ Ruby said. “Why?”
“Just wondering.” Jessica said wistfully.
Chapter three: Dogs
One other thing,” their dad said. “ There are a lot of owls in the woods.”
“ Oh. My. Gosh.” Jessica sighed. A stroke of fear gazed across her face like something alive. She had felt as if something was coldly (temperature cold. Not rude cold) pulling on her on the inside. Like wet grass, almost.
“Welcome to 2018, Jess.” Ruby said. Finally! Ruby had gotten revenge. Come on, they were sisters, it was their job to do that! She was pretty scared. Jessica, not Ruby. Although, Ruby would be scared if she knew what would happen in her near future.
She thought she would just simply ignore the owls. SHE THOUGHT IT. Daisy just barked once, then fell asleep on Jessica’s lap. Daisy didn’t like owls ether. She would try to chase them away.
Daisy is a small golden retriever puppy. Her fur shined like the sun. And her big, puppy eyes looked like chocolate kisses, and her nose looked like a big browny! So, yes, she was the cutest little thing in the world, even though dogs were allergic to chocolate. But she was also sweet, warm, and very playful and protective of her humans. Also, she was a mini golden, which meant she was small. Lap sized. She-for some reason, nodded her head up and down. Bob! Bob! Bob! Tippity-TAP, TAP… TiBAM! Then that dog did the cutest thing! She bark-howled in a weird way, as if to say “I love you.” But it sounded more like “ Awooo-ooooo!!!”
Then Jessica tried to do it too. She said, “Woooo” Then she could have sworn Daisy said,
“IT’s not Woo-woo, It’s Awooo-ooooo!!!”
Chapter four: Getting home
The car pulled into the driveway like a fly to a web. “We’re here!” Ruby said.
“Um, yay?” Jessica asked. She shrugged. Ruby didn’t expect much of an exciting reply.
They went in. Jessica looked around the house. Nope. Not the good vibe. Jessica went exploring. She went into a big, empty room and looked on her right close to the wall. Very close.
and – ahhhh! There was a buffalo. A really creepy buffalo. “Ahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!” Jessica screamed. Ruby came in.
“What?” She asked.
“Um, false alarm, Ruby. I thought it was real, nope. Just a head.” Jessica said in a way so that Ruby didn’t know about it and wouldn’t have to see it.
“What are you talking about?” Ruby said, coming in. “Plan B.” Jessica thought. “Just let it scare her” “Ahhhh!!!!” This time, Ruby yelled it. “Let’s just, Um, lets just go. ”Ruby said, reassuringly. Later, they decided they would name it “Cwda” (cooo-da). I’ll tell you what it stands for. The “C” is creepy. “W” for Weird. “D” for dead. “A” for animal. All together, “creepy, weird dead animal” Were they not brilliant?!
After that, The sisters went to their room. “Can I have the lower bunk?” Jessica asked. She didn’t want to be flying in the air like owls.
“Sure.” Ruby said. She didn’t mind. She liked upper bunk, actually, she loved it! They unpacked into their room. Then, The closet, and that was pretty easy. After that, for some decorating, they put their favorite memory pictures on the wall.
“There!” Ruby said, “Our room is set up! Do you want to go into the woods with me?” Ruby asked Jessica after a few LONG hours past.
“Sure,” Jessica said. What else could she do? They had already finished their summer homework, unpack everything, and also taken the bag thing off the car. It looked like a cockroach.
“Then let’s go!” Ruby exclaimed.
Chapter five: a deep, dark forest
A few hours later, they were deep in the woods. VERY deep in the woods. And even if they were tall enough to see the tops of the trees, they would not see anything else or anyone else until they walked 1,000 steps. Well, okay. Maybe a little less than that.
“I think we should start heading back, It’s getting dark.” Jessica said. They should start going back. And no, not because of owls, because it was getting dark, but because they would get-“Lost!” Jessica said, actually sounding scary.
“Come on,” Ruby said. “Just a few more minutes.”
“Fine,” Jessica said. So after 20 minutes, they decided to go back.
“Um, which way did we come?” Ruby asked.
“Seriously?!” Jessica said.
“Maybe we could find some of our footprints?” Ruby asked.
“No,” Jessica said in a panicked voice. “It’s very dark out here, we won’t be able to see them! I now have one thing to say to you and one thing only. I TOLD YOU SO!!!!!!! Ruby, how are we going to get out of here? How are we gonna get back Home?”
Suddenly they felt the feeling you feel when you’re walking to your room in the dark. You’d think there is one more step, but then your foot falls like a rock when you drop it or when your almost at the top of the tree, then fall. The feeling when you think something bad is gonna happen, and when it doesn’t, you get scared.
They were terrified when they heard the ear shattering sound of pure forest kings and queens: “Hooooowwwwwllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!!!” Well, more like “Ah-wooooooo” The sisters were so frightened they were going in circles, no use.
They ran. A LOT. Finally when they did not hear the wolf any more they came to a stop. “Look,” Jessica said, catching her breath. “A huge tree!!!” The big tree was the size of 1,000,000 big trees. Seriously. I am being completely honest. The tree was as wide as a castle and as tall as a sky scraper.
On one part it formed a shelter, like a cave but safe. “We can sleep there,” Ruby said, also catching her breath. Even though it was still pretty scary and dark, they went in. And guess what? They both had nightmares. Jessica dreamed an owl would kill her and make her get lost-who was she kidding, she was already lost! But, it’s not like she chose her dream. Ruby dreamed there were rats. Ewww!
The term out of the woods is just another way of saying that the woods are a dangerous place, where anything can happen.
Chapter six: Getting home(again)
“Jessica?” Said a distant, echoing voice. “J.E.S.S??? JESS!!! IC! AAAAAAAA!!!!!” Jessica jerked awake, but didn’t move a muscle.
“Today is cancelled. Go back to bed.” Jessica yawned while moving her hand back and forth to signal going back to sleep.
“But it’s a beautiful morning.” Ruby said, persuasively.
“Why is it that the one who snores is always the first one to fall asleep?” Jessica asked, then got up.
In the mornings they started recognizing things. One thing was for sure. They liked the friendly, happy daytime woods a lot better than the Dark, creepy, nighttime woods. And before they know it, It’s sunny, and they are back home! Jessica LOVED the forest-and somehow, and for some unknown reason, she thinks she might like it there too! It was exciting!
“Rob, they’re here!!!” Their mom said like a shrieking, scared, Horse?
“Where were you girls?!” Their dad yelled.
“We got lost in the forest,” Ruby explained, as if her parents were dumb.
“We were worried sick!” Their mom yelled.
“Well, everything’s okay now.” Ruby said. Jessica and Ruby ran to their rooms.
That was so fun!!! They both thought. They looked at each other. “Did she also think that was fun?” they both thought. Well they thought they thought it. They both accidentally said it. They laughed. They went into their beds with a book.
So, Jess, school’s starting in a week, we have school supplies and most of the time get grades above b, but what about friends?”
“Are you scared?”
“Are you, Jess?”
“You are!”
“Not.”
“Are.”
“Not.”
“Are.”
“Not.”
But she was wrong about one thing. Their school supplies was bad. The erasers were tiny-almost gone and the pens and markers were all on the verge of no-ink. Jessica kind of agreed. After all, she was pretty timid with kids besides Ruby.
Jessica went upside down with her legs on her bunk and the rest of her body hanging down, facing Ruby like a bat. She had overcome her fear of heights by now. Wow. She had done a lot that day. Car, Unpack, Lost in woods, home, might like it here. Key word, might.
“We will figure it out,” Jessica said with fake determination in her eyes, just because she wanted to make Ruby feel this way. And they would. Probably.
