Refined Roger, who was a very elegant and polite man, awoke suddenly, not at 6 o’clock like usual, but at 5 o’clock, to the voice of his very obedient butler, Submissive Sam. He was there to tell Refined Roger that he had a visitor on his front porch who was very eager to speak to him. Sighing, Refined Roger got up, put on his elegant silk slippers, and went to see who was visiting him so early in the morning. Refined Roger opened the door to reveal Elated Ellen, his neighbor who was always very happy about something. “Hi! There’s a ball tonight at the City Hall building and I accidentally got your invitation. Here!” she exclaimed, excitedly shoving the paper into Refined Roger’s hands. “Thanks,” he said, still groggy from waking up. “Of course! See you there. Can’t wait!” Elated Ellen said, skipping back across the street to her house. “Hmm, looks quite interesting. Submissive Sam, please set out my suit. I’ll get dressed up and go tonight,” said Roger. “Right away,” Submissive Sam said, rushing away to prepare the suit.
Refined Roger’s day was going fast! Before he knew it, he had gone on his morning walk in the park, eaten both breakfast and lunch, and it was time for his afternoon tea. Sam brought the tea and told him that his suit was ironed and ready for him upstairs in his bedroom. Roger drank his tea quickly but carefully and went to put on his freshly ironed suit. Then, he headed out the door to the ball.
Roger tried to walk on the street as little as possible because he found streets dirty and full of people, so he decided to walk through the park, like he did every morning. He walked by a group of sweaty little kids playing soccer. Suddenly, Refined Roger heard screaming behind him. He turned around to see what all the fuss was. Two kids had started wrestling each other in the grass. Then, one of them got up and started running towards Roger and away from the other one, who was aiming his soccer ball at his head. Before Refined Roger could move, the little boy had thrown the ball at his friend, missed, and hit Refined Roger instead, right in the head. Unprepared, Roger lost his balance and fell right into a huge, disgusting muddy puddle.
Luckily, Cordial Christopher, Refined Roger’s very kind neighbor, happened to be passing by. “Roger! What happened to you?” he said, helping Refined Roger out of the mud. Roger explained what had happened. “Well, you can’t wear that to the ball! Let me lend you some clean clothes,” Cordial Christopher offered. “Well, only if you insist. I don’t want to impose on you,” replied Refined Roger. “Please, it would be my pleasure,” demanded Cordial Christopher, walking alongside Roger out of the park.
The two men arrived at Christopher’s house. Laborious Liam, who was Cordial Christopher’s very hard-working husband, answered the door with a hammer in his hand and a hard hat that was close to falling off his head. “Wait right here and I’ll bring you some clothes,” said Cordial Christopher. Refined Roger looked down at his watch. “Christopher, thanks for trying to help but the ball already started. What’s the point?” Roger said. “Well, if you’re not going to the ball at least get some clean clothes on and come out with us.” Cordial Christopher gestured to himself and Liam. Again, not wanting to impose, Refined Roger declined the offer. “No really. I insist.” Christopher pushed. So, Refined Roger took the clean clothes and put them on. Then, Cordial Christopher got Laborious Liam to take a break and the three went out for a walk.
What could’ve been an awful day turned into a fun day full of new experiences for Refined Roger. The three men walked in the park, this time avoiding the kids playing soccer, and around town. They had fun, messed around, and even joined a small game of basketball with some other people they met at the park. That day, Refined Roger learned to loosen up. From then on he didn’t need a suit to be himself. He was less elegant, but he liked the new him.
