Excerpt from Reputation vs. Friends

“Mutinous Mindy, it’s time to wake up,” said Mindy’s mother.

“Ughhh, fine,” said Mutinous Mindy. “Mother, make me breakfast.”

“What’s the magic word?” asked Mindy’s mother.

“No, just make me breakfast,” snarled Mutinous Mindy.

“Um, ok, it’s on the table,” said Mindy’s mother.

Mutinous Mindy walked into the kitchen and slouched into the chair that she always sat in. Then she threw all her books and her homework that she didn’t do into her small black backpack. Without eating breakfast, she rushed out the door to wait for the bus.

When Mutinous Mindy got to the corner where she waited for the bus, some kids from her school who were just trying to be nice, walked by her and said, “Hi, Mutinous Mindy.” She glared at them with a malevolent look in her eye, and they ran screaming down the block.

When the bus stopped right in front of Mutinous Mindy, she walked slowly up the stairs just so the kids behind her couldn’t get on. The bus doors shut right behind her with the kids on the other side.

Mutinous Mindy raced to the back of the bus where some kids were sitting in the last row. They automatically got up and left the seat open for Mindy to relax in. The seat had a lot of luxuriances that Mindy liked. She liked that the seat was next to the window and she could look outside and draw the views. She also liked that she could kick the seat in front of her and no one was behind her to kick her seat.

When Mutinous Mindy got to school, she walked into her first class. She was five minutes late, but the teacher didn’t notice. She took a seat in the back.

“Class,” announced the teacher, “We have a new student. Ebullient Emma, would you like to introduce yourself?”

“Hi! I’m Ebullient Emma! Today is a wonderful day, and I am so lucky to get to share it with you!” Ebullient Emma said happily.

Everyone in the class laughed at Ebullient Emma, including Mutinous Mindy. “You’re so ludicrous,” sneered one of her classmates. Emma didn’t care and she walked to the back of the classroom and took the seat next to Mutinous Mindy. Ebullient Emma smiled at Mutinous Mindy, and Mutinous Mindy smiled back without realizing it.

As the weeks went by, Mutinous Mindy and Ebullient Emma got closer and their bond grew. Ebullient Emma’s cheerfulness and positivity started to rub off on Mutinous Mindy.

One day at lunch, Mutinous Mindy and Ebullient Emma were sitting at a table together. Mean Mason came over to their table and snickered, “Hey, Mutinous Mindy. You’re such a goody-two-shoes, just like Ebullient Emma. No one is scared of you anymore. You have to choose between your reputation and your so-called friend, Ebullient Emma.”

Mutinous Mindy looked at Ebullient Emma with her innocent face, and then looked at Mean Mason, and around the lunchroom where everyone was now staring at her.

“So, what’s it gonna be?” snapped Mean Mason. Mutinous Mindy stood up with her lunch tray in her hands and poured her soup all over Ebullient Emma’s head.

“I can’t believe I was ever friends with you,” Mutinous Mindy yelled at Ebullient Emma. She stormed over to Mean Mason. “That’s how it’s done!” said Mutinous Mindy, as people started running out of the lunchroom.

As soon as Mutinous Mindy could snap her fingers, the lunchroom was empty except for Mutinous Mindy and Ebullient Emma, who was still covered in soup. Mutinous Mindy realized what she had done. She had destroyed the only friendship she had ever had.
